5 Simple Short Ankara Gowns Trending for Ladies in Lagos 2026 - Prices & Where To Buy

Simple short A-line Ankara gown for ladies in Lagos - Joy's style

My cousin Joy wanted simple short Ankara gowns. Not that long bubu style that drags on floor. She wanted that short, classy, girly look you can wear to church, birthday, or even to see a friend in Lagos. She went to Balogun market with me last Saturday, then we checked Tejuosho in Yaba on Monday. She tried five different short Ankara styles, carried them inside danfo from Yaba to Oshodi to test comfort, and sat down for 3 hours to check if it squeezes. Only three made her feel free and still look classy. Here is the full gist and WHERE TO BUY in Lagos.

I bought quality Ankara at Balogun for ₦5,500 per yard. The seller at first said ₦7,000 but after pricing we agreed ₦5,500. You need 2.5 yards for a simple short gown if you are slim, 3 yards if you are chubby.

Total sewing cost: ₦8,000 (Mama T at Yaba)

Material cost: ₦13,750 (2.5 yards x ₦5,500)

Total cost: ₦21,750 complete — ready-made on Instagram was selling same style for ₦28,000 to ₦35,000.

Where To Buy Simple Ankara In Lagos

For Ankara: Go to Balogun Market (Lagos Island) 1 yard from ₦5,000 to ₦6,500 for original Holland or high-quality Vlisco imitation. If you are on mainland, go to Tejuosho Market Yaba or Oshodi Market 1 yard ₦4,500 to ₦5,500. Go early morning Monday to Thursday, less crowd and sellers give better price.

For Lining and Accessories: Idumota has lining from ₦1,000 per yard, and small zip from ₦300.

Good Tailors for Short Gowns in Lagos: Mama T at Tejuosho Yaba sewing ₦7,000 to ₦9,000 for simple short gown. Surulere (Adelabu area) sewing ₦9,000 to ₦12,000 with neat finishing. Ikeja (Computer Village side tailors) ₦10,000.

5 Things I Learned From Checking Tailor Prices for Short Ankara Gowns in Lagos

  1. Always ask 2 to 3 tailors before you choose one. Same Ankara, different sewing price.
  2. Take a clear picture of the short gown you want. Short gown needs perfect cutting, if not it will look shapeless.
  3. Ask if lining and zip are included. Some tailors say ₦7,000 then add ₦1,500 for lining later.
  4. For short gowns, ask for length above knee or knee-length. If too short, you will not be comfortable in danfo or church.
  5. Do not pay full money if you do not trust the tailor. Pay half first.
Fitted short Ankara gown with small sleeve for wedding guest in Lagos

1. The Simple A-Line Short Ankara Gown

This was the winner. Joy loved it. A-line cut, flares from waist, above knee, with small short sleeve. Very girly and free. She wore it to church on Sunday and to her friend's birthday after. She could sit, stand, enter danfo, no stress. The material does not cling. It breathes. We bought the Ankara at Balogun for ₦5,500 per yard, bright yellow and blue flower print. The tailor at Yaba charged ₦8,000 and delivered in 3 days. This style fits slim and chubby girls.

2. The Fitted Short Ankara Gown with Small Sleeve

If you like fitted look, try this. Fitted at top, small flare at bottom, knee-length, with small sleeve that covers shoulder. Looks classy but still simple. Good for birthday photos and for owanbe as guest. Joy tried it for a wedding guest look. She looked mature and neat. Sewing was ₦9,000 in Surulere because of lining.

3. The Off-Shoulder Short Ankara Gown

This one is trending for young ladies in Lagos. Off-shoulder, short, with small ruffle at chest. Very fine for 18 to 28 years. Joy wore it for her birthday dinner at Ikeja Mall. She felt confident. But note this style is not for church or office. It's for birthday, dinner, or date. If you are shy, add small strap so it does not fall. Ankara needed is 3 yards because of ruffle.

Ankara shirt dress short gown with collar and belt for ladies in Lagos

4. The Shirt Ankara Short Gown

This is like shirt dress made with Ankara. Buttons at front, collar, belt at waist, above knee. Very classy and different. You can wear it to casual office on Friday, to see a friend, or to market. Joy likes it because she can open small button at top and it still looks decent. Good for ladies who do not like tight gowns. Tailor charged ₦10,000 at Yaba because of buttons and collar work.

5. The Ankara Bubu Short Gown - Free Gown

Free bubu style but short. Not fitted at all. Very free, air enters. Best for Lagos heat and for pregnant ladies or those who like free wear. Joy bought it for everyday wear, to go to market and to church mid-week. It was the cheapest to sew — ₦6,000 at Tejuosho. Only 2 yards Ankara needed if you want very short, 2.5 yards if you want knee-length free gown.

What Material Is Best for Short Ankara Gowns in Lagos Heat?

For Lagos heat, buy 100% cotton Ankara, not the shiny silky imitation. Cotton breathes. The shiny one makes you sweat and clings to body when you enter danfo. I tested two materials cotton Ankara vs silky Ankara inside danfo from Yaba to Oshodi by 2pm. Cotton Ankara was free, silky Ankara made me sweat and stick. Also, always add cotton lining inside, not satin lining, if you sweat a lot. Cotton lining is ₦1,000 per yard at Idumota.

Which of These 5 Short Ankara Gowns Fits Your Body Type?

If you are slim: All 5 will fit you. But A-line and Off-shoulder will make you look fuller and girly.

If you are chubby or have big hips: Go for A-line (Style 1) and Shirt Gown (Style 4). They free you at waist and do not show tummy. Avoid fitted (Style 2) if you have tummy and do not want to show it.

If you are short: Go for above-knee, not knee-length. It makes your legs look longer.

If you are tall: Knee-length looks more classy than above-knee.

Final Thoughts

Out of the 5, Joy's final picks were Style 1 (A-Line) for church and everyday, and Style 2 (Fitted with small sleeve) for wedding guest and birthday. Two gowns total cost was ₦43,000 in Lagos. Both are simple, short, and comfortable for Lagos danfo and church. She wore the A-line to church and three people asked her for her tailor's number. That is how you know it is good.
